The band's 2009 debut was written and recorded while Zazu was still a teenager, and with it, they left many of their older, male peers in the Nashville indie rock scene in the dust. ![]() There was always a punk undercurrent, too, and that soon rose to the surface. At first, they played Carter Family covers and other twangy originals indebted to traditional country and rockabilly. She came back year after year, as a student and then a volunteer.Įventually, she started Those Darlins with the camp's founder and fellow volunteers. One decade before that gig, she had begun carving her own musical path. In 2003, when the Southern Girls Rock & Roll Camp was founded in Murfreesboro - one of the first of its kind in the world - a 14-year-old Zazu was in the inaugural class. At show's end, she leaped into the crowd, guitar in tow. When Zazu stepped up to that microphone, she locked eyes with those in the front row, staring daggers even through her guitar solos. They played on a tent stage, where indie rock bands tend to look off in the distance as they play to the masses. It was evident when Those Darlins played the Bonnaroo festival in 2014 - just down the road from Murfreesboro, Tenn. On Tuesday, Zazu died at age 28, after an extensive and determined battle with cancer. "There's a tumor growing on my body," she sang. "I don't know what lays in store/ but I ain't afraid/ I ain't afraid anymore." Hearing that song now, it's hard to believe it was written years before Zazu learned she had cervical cancer. It was also the title of the final song on the final album by her trailblazing rock group, Those Darlins. Over the last year, those two words were a rallying cry for friends and fans of Nashville artist Jessi Zazu.
